The painting was based on a historic black and white photo that had been digitally colorized. Wooden Leg is the name of the fellow in the picture and interestingly, he did not have a wooden artificial limb.
When I chose the reference photo, I was looking to work on something that differed a bit from my norm. I liked the idea of blurring the background but leaving enough detail that you could still make out the horse and land. Not only did I find the photo of quite intriguing, I also found lots of info about him online. There is too much info to list here, but check out his Wikipedia to learn more.
