20” x 16” oil on linen panel, 2024.
When I initially began, I had planned to paint the main subject in color. After getting a bit done, I started to think rendering her and the bike in black-and-white would be the way to go and then utilize color in the background.
Once the subject was done, I had to figure out what colors to use for the background. I first painted the 70s mustard-ish yellow. I usually really dig a tone like that, but for some reason, it just didn’t feel complete. After tweaking the original yellow then adding a lighter section, the painting was almost done. It took a couple of days before I decided it needed a bit of red to bring it all together.
