Marvin’s Marvelous Monday

16” x 20” oil on linen panel, 2023.

#image1

I found a cool picture of an older man with a sweet mustache enjoying driving what I assumed to be his sports car, while wearing old style racing gear. The original picture showed a bit more of his car, but I couldn’t make out the model. I cropped the picture a bit because the main thing that struck me was how elated the dude seemed to be, so I wanted him to be more of the focus rather than the car.

I originally painted the picture with a darker more abstract background, but after staring at it for a few days, I realized that it needed to be brightened. I then decided that I wanted a bright color that was not natural to the scene. I think it gives the painting a feeling of realism mixed with Pop Art.

The name partially come from a good friend. After showing him an early progress photo of the painting, he said that the man looks like he would be named Marvin. I concurred completely and made it into an alliteration, because who doesn’t love a good alliteration?
